Plain definitions for the specifications, setup terms, and workflow choices that affect a smart telescope decision.

How to use this glossary

Start with the term that stopped you in a comparison or manual. Each definition explains the buying or ownership question it changes.

Optics, mounts, and imaging

Four terms in pictures

Each schematic explains a general relationship.

Aperture

The diameter of the light-collecting opening.

Focal length

The distance from the lens or mirror to the focal point.

Alt-azimuth mount

The mount moves up and down and rotates left and right.

Image stacking

Successive exposures are combined to build an image.

Alt-azimuth mount

A mount that moves in altitude (up and down) and azimuth (left and right).

Why it matters: The mount is mechanically simple. Imaging software must account for how the sky appears to rotate during tracking.

Aperture

The diameter of a telescope’s light-collecting lens or mirror.

Why it matters: It affects light gathering and resolving power. The sensor, optics, software, and sky conditions also shape the final image.

Equatorial mode

A tracking setup aligned so one principal axis follows Earth’s rotation.

Why it matters: It can change the setup and tracking workflow. Exact requirements differ by product.

Eyepiece

The optical element a visual observer looks through to examine the image formed by the telescope.

Why it matters: Its focal length works with the telescope focal length to determine magnification.

Focal length

The distance from a lens or mirror to the focal point.

Why it matters: It helps determine image scale and framing. With an eyepiece, it also affects magnification.

Focal ratio

The focal length divided by the aperture.

Why it matters: It describes one optical relationship. The complete telescope also depends on its sensor, mount, software, and package.

Image stacking

Combining successive exposures to build an image.

Why it matters: Smart telescopes may perform this automatically. Results depend on tracking, exposure choices, processing, and sky conditions.

Included accessory

An item the manufacturer says is supplied in the package.

Why it matters: Inclusion can vary by region, edition, and date.

Compatible accessory

An item the telescope supports even when sold separately.

Why it matters: Compatibility and inclusion are separate buying questions.

Plate solving

Matching star patterns in an image to determine where a telescope or camera is pointing.

Why it matters: It can support alignment, target location, and automated workflows.

Seeing

Atmospheric turbulence that affects the apparent steadiness and fine detail of a telescopic view.

Why it matters: Changing conditions can alter what is visible even when the equipment is unchanged.
